Travelling footsteps

November 22, 2010

As photographers, we often talk about learning through photography. The journey of interacting with the world through our lens, and what we learn about ourselves and others through images.

Well, I’ve got something slightly embarrassing to share. I’ve discovered that I have a bit of a foot fetish. That’s right. Feet.

I think they are the pictures I take in between taking pictures, if that makes any sense. The ‘downtime’ where I’m just photographing without really thinking. I’m not entirely sure when or why, but there they are. Pictures of people’s feet: while they walk along the street, run up the escalators, or wait for bus to arrive.

Mostly, the shots are rubbish. But sometimes I find myself really drawn to them. I like them. There’s something expressive about feet, doing their thing quietly while the real story unfolds around them.

To show I’m not totally obsessed and single-minded with this weirdness, I’m also partial to the odd belly.

“To show I’m not totally obsessed and single-minded with this weirdness, I’m also partial to the odd belly.”

    *chuckles* That’s it, you’re a certified nutcase.

I have these thing about feet as well, or legs in my case. I like to watch people walk. Walking is such a automatic don’t-think-about-it thing for most people, but no two people walk alike. Sometimes I watch people walk and try to sync my pacing and gait with theirs and I’m amazed at how uncomfortable it is for me to walk like someone else. Goes to show we can’t really walk in others’ shoes. Too painful!

I hope you’re subtle when trying to sync your walk with strangers in the street! I’ve got this image of you uncomfortably trying to shadow someone’s walk, while they peer over their shoulder with an extremely worried expression…

Hehe, I like to think I’m not being very obvious. Normally it’s the sort of thing I do when walking to the bus station from work, so I’m in the throng of a thousand people, all trying to pretend everyone else doesn’t exist. Who knows though!

I console myself by thinking, at least I’m providing entertainment to someone!

Everyone loves a bit of entertainment on their commute. It’s practically a community service you’re providing!
